In the center of our town, a large, unlined coal ash dump sits directly above the popular public greenway on the banks of Bolin Creek, where families and children explore and play.
The coal ash is located on Chapel Hill's Police Station property along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Testing of groundwater and soil has found high levels of arsenic, mercury, chromium, lead, thallium, and other dangerous pollutants.
Click the “Clean It Up!” button below for information about how to tell the Chapel Hill Town Council to protect our community, the Bolin Creek habitat, and the regional water supply by removing the eroding steep slope of coal ash above Bolin Creek, as well as other areas of exposed coal ash and contaminated soil.
